HYDERABAD: A series of initiatives to give fillip to milk and meat production and significantly increase the annual growth rate in the two sectors were announced by the State Government here on Monday. It has decided to start 750 new artificial insemination centres with an investment of Rs. 11 crore besides embarking upon lateral induction of high yielding milch animals from other States. The Government would provide one lakh milch animals under the Chief Minister’s package and another 32,000 under the Prime Minister’s special package during the current year. Announcing the measures at a press conference here on Monday, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said, out of Rs. 35,000 incurred on each animal, Rs. 15,000 would be provided as subsidy to selected farmers while the balance would be mobilised through bank linkages. The `pavala vaddi’ scheme (three per cent interest per annum) would be implemented wherein five per cent interest on loans obtained by women self-help group members through direct linkages would be borne by the Government, the Chief Minister said. For other farmers under BPL category, the Government would bear nine per cent interest of the 12 per cent interest charged. Since 24 per cent animals in the State were categorised as high yielding varieties, procurement of high yielding varieties from other States like Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu was made mandatory.
