TSR award conferred on Nirmala Deshpande

VISAKHAPATNAM: A Sarva Dharma Sama Bhavana Sammelan was organised by the TSR Kalapeetham here on Monday as part of the 64th birthday celebrations of Union Minister of State for Mines T. Subbarami Reddy. It was attended by politicians, artistes, social workers along with priests and heads of mutts.

The kalapeetham felicitated octogenarian actor Dev Anand and conferred the TSR National Integration award on social worker and Rajya Sabha Member Nirmala Deshpande, the TSR Star Award, instituted this year, on film actor M. Mohan Babu and TSR Life Achievement Awards on playback singers Yesudas and Chitra.

Ms. Deshpande, in her brief thanksgiving speech, said Dr. Reddy was basically a spiritual person who was also very keen to help the people.

He was following Gandhiji’s ideal of spirituality and equal justice for all.

Earlier, Dr. Reddy said his idea of celebrating his birthday was to honour artistes, philosophers, social workers and spiritual heads who were helping society, and have been doing so for the last 10 years here, since this place and the people here were very dear to his heart.

Held every year

The sammelan is being held every year to propagate the spirit of religious tolerance as all religions were the same, he said.

Making Visakhapatnam a slum-free city by next year and continuing medical aid to the poor were on his agenda and he would keep his promise, he said.

Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy, Ministers Kanna Lakshmi Narayana and J.C. Diwakara Reddy, the former APCC president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, MPs V. Hanumantha Rao, Girish Sanghi and Vijay Dadra, MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy, Chairman of VUDA P.S.N. Raju, many MLAs and MLCs from the district, Adviser to State Government K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, Mayor P. Janardhana Rao, playback singer P. Suseela, veteran actress Vanisri, Chairman of AP Film Chamber of Commerce M.S. Reddy, Gnanapeeth Awardee C. Narayana Reddy and others were present.
