dated September 19, 1957: West Pakistan’s future

The West Pakistan Legislative Assembly on September 17 adopted by an overwhelming majority a resolution seeking to dismember the present West Pakistan Province into four or more Provinces. The resolution was sponsored by the ruling Republican Party and its ally, the National Awami Party. The Muslim League officially remained neutral. The resolution said: “This House recommends to the Government to communicate the view of this Assembly that the present Province of West Pakistan be reconstituted as a sub-federation with four or more fully autonomous Provinces.”
