dated September 19, 1957: Panna’s diamond mines

The Government of India have decided to set up a corporation for working the diamond mines in Panna, in Madhya Pradesh, which are to be nationalised shortly. The proposed corporation will adopt mechanical devices for full exploitation of the mines. At present the miners employed by private firms go hardly 40 feet deep for excavating diamonds, but with mechanical devices it would be possible to go as deep as 2,000 feet.
