PUDUCHERRY: A total of 40 cadets of the NCC Naval Wing of Puducherry and Cuddalore started off on an ocean sailing expedition to Thopputhurai on Tuesday.

Inspector-General of Police Kishan Kumar flagged off the expedition from New Port Jetty. He handed over the expedition flag to the leader of the Puducherry team, in the presence of Colonel Purushottam, group commander, Puducherry NCC Group.

The cadets, who will sail in two whaler boats, will cover a distance of 436 km in 12 days.

They will call at various ports, including those at Cuddalore, Parangipettai, Poompuhar and Nagapattinam on the way. They will return to Puducherry on September 29.

The ocean sailing expedition aims at developing a spirit of adventure among youth, inculcating team spirit and the capacity to endure cramped living conditions in a boat at sail.

According to a press release here, the cadets would be trained in navigation, boat handling and sailing. The expedition would also enable the group to become eligible for the ‘Prime Minister’s Trophy for the Most Enterprising Naval NCC Unit’. The group came third in 2006.

The cadets from Puducherry have been drawn from Tagore Arts College, Bharathidasan Government College for Women, and Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College, Mahe.

The Cuddalore team comprises cadets studying in TBML College, Porayar, Poompuhar College of Melaiyur, and Faculty of Engineering, Annamalai Nagar. Two fishing trawlers will be accompanying the boats.
