A novel form of protest
Farmers carried begging bowls to highlight their plight.
The rock-bottom prices of coconut have prompted a farmers’ organisation to go in for a novel kind of protest. Farmers Relief Forum workers and farmers showed their protest by smashing coconuts in front of the District Collectorate here on Monday.
The workers had come in procession from Erahnipalam Junction in the city, carrying coconut and other coconut-related products. The farmers wore traditional caps and came with begging bowls to highlight their plight. They are demanding arresting the fall in prices; declaring Kozhikode district a disaster-hit area affected by epidemic diseases and crop loss owing to heavy rain; writing off their debts; interest-free loans; a Vigilance inquiry into copra procurement by Kerafed; and putting a stop to anti-farmer measures.
