Major portion remitted by truckers 50 per cent of cases relate to jumping of signals, wrong parking PUDUCHERRY: The traffic police have collected a record amount of fine during the last nine-and-a-half months. According to sources, persons who had violated traffic rules were fined up to Rs. 22.6 lakh till September 15, overtaking the previous high of Rs. 17.27 lakh in 2004. The town wing of the traffic police attributed the “quantum jump” to intensified vehicle check and the drive against the entry of trucks into the town for transporting goods after the setting up of a truck terminal at Mettupalyam. Traffic violators were fined up to Rs 9.1 lakh during the last two-and-half months. In July, the collection stood at Rs 3.4 lakh and in August, Rs. 3.6 lakh. In the first fortnight of September, the traffic police fined offenders up to Rs 2.1 lakh. According to them, a major portion of the fine this year was remitted by truckers. As many as 275 truck drivers had been booked for violations in the last two months. About 50 per cent of the cases of traffic violation cases related to jumping of signals and parking at non-specified areas. Superintendent of Police (Traffic) S. Kuppusamy said the drive would be intensified in the coming months. The traffic police have mooted a suggestion for starting a mobile court for speedy disposal of cases, police said. Setting up of one more traffic station between Kirumampakkam and Ariyankuppam on the Cuddalore Road was also being considered, they said.
