Rain continues; many areas flooded as tank overflows

Cases of house collapse reported from Haveri


HUBLI: Many houses situated close to the Karki Halla here were flooded on Tuesday due to overflowing of the Unakal tank. The situation was similar in several low-lying areas of Dharwad, where houses remained flooded for the second consecutive day. Incessant rain has been lashing the twin cities since Monday evening.

Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad M.S. Srikar, Municipal Commissioner Ajay Nagabhushan and other officials, Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani led the relief measures.

Relief measures were on throughout the day and people were shifted people from low lying areas to safe places.

Several “kalyana mantaps” in the vicinity of the low-lying areas were used by the corporation to provide shelter to the displaced people. Food packets were supplied to them.Bhavikatti Plot, Jannat Nagar, Laxmisingana Kere and adjoining areas in Dharwad and Lingaraj Nagar, Hanumanthnagar and Vikas Nagar situated along the course of Karki Halla and some areas in Old Hubli were affected badly due to the rain.

However, there have been no casualties.

Holiday

The district administration has declared holiday on September 19 and 20 for all the primary and high schools in Dharwad district as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, normal life was affected in the districts of Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag on Tuesday because of the incessant rain.

While the low lying areas in these districts were again inundated in rain water, the day to day activities almost came to a standstill as the rain continued to lash till Tuesday evening.

Houses damaged

Thousands of houses were damaged. Official sources said that the quantum of loss of property was yet to be ascertained.

A man died in Antur-Bentur village of Gadag taluk following collapse of his house in the early hours of Tuesday.

The police gave the name of the victim as Kallappa Sangappa Meguri (68), who they said, was sleeping when the accident occurred.

Gadag was the worst-affected district where flash floods in Benni Halla severed road connectivity in some places.

Cases of house collapse have been reported in Haveri district. There are no casualties.
