THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala School of Mathematics, being set up by the Department of Atomic Energy and the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment will be inaugurated in 2008. The institute is being set up on the campus of the Centre for Water Resource Development and Management (CWRDM) in Kozhikode. KSCTE executive vice-president E.P. Yesodharan and DAE joint secretary C.V. Ananda Bose signed the memorandum of understanding, in the presence of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and DAE director Bharati Chauhan, at the Chief Minister’s conference hall on Tuesday evening. The MoU has five years validity. On the objectives of the institute, Dr. Yesodharan and Dr. Bose said it was proposed to be set up on the lines of the Newton Institute in Cambridge and would initially have post-doctoral research programmes in frontier areas of mathematics. The initial expense of the institute had been estimated at Rs. 5 crore and the DAE had sanctioned Rs. 1 crore as seed money. The rest of the expenses would be equally shared by the KSCTE and the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM). While conducting post-doctoral programmes, the school will not be holding regular classes or awarding any degrees. It will carry out sponsored research programmes funded by national and international institutions. The programmes will be scrutinised by a steering committee nominated by the DAE and the NBHM. Either the NBHM chairman or an expert nominated by him will be the chairman of the steering committee. The committee will comprise two experts nominated by the DAE and two others by the KSCTE. The school director will be the member-secretary of the council. The steering committee will look after academic and research programmes and selection and appointment of the director, registrar and faculty members.
