Awaiting new look: The site selected for constructing the compost yard at Krishnapuram in Walajapet panchayat union. — RANIPET: The legal hurdle for Ranipet Municipality in constructing a garbage dumping and compost yard for Ranipet, Arcot and Walajapet Municipalities at Krishnapuram in Marudhambakkam village panchayat in Walajapet panchayat union has been cleared. The Madras High Court recently rejected the Marudhambakkam panchayat’s plea for an interim injunction restraining the three municipalities from using the selected site as a dumping ground.Of the project’s estimated cost of Rs.1.08 crore , a sum of Rs.40 lakh is the share of Ranipet Municipality, which has been entrusted with the task of executing the work. The Arcot and Walajapet Municipalities would contribute Rs. 34 lakh each. Kutti alias P. Krishnamoorthy, chairman of Ranipet Municipality, said that while 12.56 acres of poromboke land was allotted by the Government, the Marudhambakkam panchayat objected to the use of the land on the grounds that it would lead to environmental pollution. The Marudhambakkam panchayat president filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court pleading for an injunction restraining the municipalities from executing the work. The locals were constructing a temple on the site, while the panchayat laid a percolation pond. With the High Court rejecting the plea of the panchayat, the Ranipet Municipality is planning to begin the construction on Friday. Work orders have been issued. The project comprises construction of windrows at a cost of Rs. 9 lakh, drain (at a cost of Rs.14 lakh), borewell and overhead tank (Rs.5.5 lakh), levelling of ground (Rs.3.5 lakh), cement roads (Rs. 27 lakh), two godowns (Rs. 5 lakh), compound wall (Rs. 23 lakh), fencing (Rs. 9 lakh), and purchase of a pulveriser (Rs. 8 lakh) and a tractor (Rs. 5 lakh). At present, garbage is being dumped on a site on the Madras Bangalore Trunk Road.
