NEW DELHI: An alleged conduit of terrorist outfit Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, who was declared a proclaimed offender by a local court in a case accusing him of providing logistical support to two Pakistani militants in 2001, has been arrested in Anand Vihar here by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. Acting on a tip-off that Asad Hilal would come to the Anand Vihar bus terminus, a team led by Inspector Rajendra Singh laid a trap and arrested him on September 14. He was produced in a court that remanded him to two-day police custody the next day. According to the police, the Special Cell had on September 12, 2001, arrested two Pakistani militants, Maqsood Ahmad and Syed Mohammad, in New Friends Colony with 2 kg of explosives, two detonators, a hand grenade and a mobile phone. Later the police also purportedly seized 6 kg of explosives from Maqsood’s residence. During interrogation, the two purportedly disclosed that Asad Hilal and Habib, both residents of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, had provided them logistical support. Asad and Habib were declared proclaimed offenders by the court concerned on December 17, 2001. After the trial, Maqsood and Syed were convicted in March last year. About Asad, the police said he had met Maqsood in New Friends Colony through Habib and arranged a shelter for him in Taimoor Nagar village. It is alleged that he also arranged a mobile phone for Maqsood. According to the police, Asad also met Syed and made arrangements for his travel to Jammu and Kashmir to smuggle explosives from there into the Capital. The police said Asad took the terrorists around to acquaint them with the topography of Delhi and satellite towns.
