THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) would undertake a detailed study on the quality of piped water being supplied in the State in view of reports that the presence of coliform bacteria is alarmingly high in piped water, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran told the Assembly on Tuesday. Replying to a submission by Jose Thettayil (JD-S), the Minister said that the study had become necessary because just 300 samples taken by a Malayalam newspaper had put the percentage of coliform bacteria present in piped drinking water at 99 per cent and in river water at 93 per cent. That such high percentage of coliform bacteria has been detected in chlorinated water is a matter of serious concern, he added.
