THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government would submit to the Centre a second package of project proposals for the development of Kochi by December. Responding to a calling attention motion moved by K. Babu (Congress) in the Assembly on Tuesday, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the government had earlier submitted a detailed package to the Centre in order to improve the infrastructure facilities in the city. Several of these projects were proposed to be taken up as part of the Jawharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The Centre had sanctioned Rs.185 crore under the Sustainable Urban Development Project. The Chief Minister said reports for developing 19 roads within the city limits and constructing new flyovers were also ready. The project report for the Metro project was under preparation by experts of the Delhi Metro Corporation. The government had initiated steps for construction of a new bridge to replace the ageing Venduruthy Bridge, but work had got stalled after some progress was made in the piling work. A meeting of all concerned would be convened soon. Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran said it had been decided to authorise the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to implement the drinking water supply projects forming part of the JNNURM. The understanding was reached after prolonged discussions between the KWA, Local Self-Government Department and representatives of the local bodies in Ernakulam district. The Chief Minister would inaugurate the HUDCO-aided drinking water supply scheme for the city on October 5.
