BANGALORE: Minister for Forest and Ecology C. Chennigappa has said that the Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs, who played an instrumental role in making H.D. Kumarsawmy the Chief Minister, want him to continue in the post even after October 3. The Minister was speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a two-day conference of forest researchers and scientists working in southern States here on Tuesday. Despite opposition from party president H.D. Deve Gowda 19 months ago, these MLAs backed Mr. Kumarasawmy when he struck a deal with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Within 19 months, Mr. Kumaraswamy had proved his mettle as an efficient administrator through his novel and pro-poor programmes and won the confidence of the people and the party in an enviable fashion, he said. Besides the mounting public pressure, the party was feeling that Mr. Kumaraswamy should continue in his present position in the larger interest of society. Mr. Kumaraswamy should take cognisance of public view, particularly of the poor and the minorities, instead of transferring the power to the BJP, he said. However, the party leaders such as Mr. Deve Gowda, JD(S) State unit president N. Merajuddin Patel and Minister for Home and Parliamentary Affairs M.P. Prakash would deliberate over the issue and arrive at a decision at an appropriate time, Mr. Chennigappa said. Replying to questions, the Minister said Mr. Deve Gowda was his leader.
