JAIPUR: About 40 MLAs cutting across party lines, attending a unique “direct dialogue” with Dalits in the Rajasthan Assembly premises here on the opening day of the monsoon session on Tuesday, were introduced to a host of Dalit issues and apprised of the need to highlight them during the debates in the House. Assembly Speaker Sumitra Singh inaugurated the dialogue, organised by the Centre for Dalit Rights (CDR), in one of the conference halls in the Assembly building, while it was presided over by former Member of Parliament Than Singh Jatav. CDR chairperson P.L. Mimroth sought the MLAs’ help in bringing the Dalit issues and Dalits’ rights to lead a respectable life to the forefront of discussions in the Assembly so as to ensure a fair share to Dalits in the development plans and allocations. Some of the MLAs participating in the dialogue agreed that even the Budget allocations for Dalits were often not fully used and said the funds under the Special Component Plan should be spent exclusively for the advancement of Scheduled Castes. Mr. Mimroth called upon the MLAs not to approve a proposed amendment to the Rajasthan Tenancy Act, 1955, allowing transfer of Dalits’ land to others.
