Krishnagiri: Four-laning work on National Highway 7 between Thoppur and Krishnagiri is proceeding at a fast pace. The 69.4 km stretch on the busy Salem-Bangalore (NH-7) is scheduled to be completed in December 2008.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced the process of black topping at several points on the section. Uneven surfaces on both sides of the road had been levelled and fresh layers of black metal and tar were being laid at several places. The work was progressing steadily and was expected to be completed within the scheduled time.

By-pass roads

Sources in NHAI said that four by-pass roads would come up at Dharmapuri, Matlampatti, Periyampatti and Adhiyamankottai in Dharmapuri district and Kaveripattinam in Krishnagiri district. A major bridge to a distance of 225 metres would come up on the Thenpennaiar River in addition to the existing bridge in Kaveripattinam.

Six flyovers

Service roads to a distance of 35 km would be come up on the stretch from Thoppur to Krishnagiri (94 to 156 km) taking into account the necessity of traffic. Six flyovers would also come up on the course of the four-lane highway in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.

In addition 15 underpasses and 29 bus bays would be set up on the stretch. A toll plaza would be built at (154 km) in Dharmapuri district. The project on completion would ease traffic congestion and reduce travelling time from Salem to Bangalore.
