Rawat elected BJP chief

DEHRA DUN: Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Almora, Bachi Singh Rawat was elected unopposed as president of the Uttarakhand unit of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party here on Tuesday. A formal declaration of the result would be made by the central observer and party general secretary Thawar Chand Gehlot on Wednesday, the party spokesperson Devindra Bhasin said.

Others elected unopposed as BJP National Council members are Puran Chand Sharma from Almora, Anusuya Prasad Bhatt from Pauri, Narayan Singh Rana from Tehri, Suresh Rathore from Hardwar and Shanti Mehra from Nainital. The party headquarters was the scene of much fanfare as Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri escorted Mr. Rawat for the nomination. Others present included former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiary, the party leader in charge of Uttarakhand.
