Families along the Hundri bank shifted Traffic movement and communications hit KURNOOL: Tungabhadra received huge flood due to heavy rain in the catchment area in Karnataka in the last two days. The TB dam at Hospet released 1.60 lakh cusecs around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, which is likely to arrive at Kurnool 24 hours later. The TB dam authorities alerted the CWC that the discharge might peak to 2.50 lakh cusecs any time. The Flood Control Authorities have said they were unable to track the flood as the rainfall occurred at places where it was not monitored. According to reports, the flood is likely to cross three lakh cusecs in Tungabhadra overflowing the banks at several places in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts. Hagari, an important tributary was contributing 50,000 cusecs. Officials fear that the flood situation will turn worse if rain continues locally adding to the river flood. Gajuladinne project discharged 40,000 cusecs into Hundri river as the reservoir reached full capacity. The revenue and police authorities vacated families from low-lying areas along the Hundri banks. People who had the nightmarish experience of June 22 fresh in their minds left their homes. The rivers will have a choking effect at the confluences at Kurnool and Alampur as Srisailam reservoir was stocked to the full level of 885 ft. Huge crop lossMeanwhile, the heavy rainfall caused a huge loss to standing crops. Sunflower, cotton and groundnut suffered badly. Sunflower farmers said they lost the crop just before harvest. The authorities set up three relief camps in Kurnool to house the displaced families, one at Yemmiganur and one at Adoni. Four mandals received the rainfall above 100 mm in the last 24 hours. Road communication to scores of villages was cut off due to the swollen rivulets.
