JAIPUR: Preparations for the 12th International Lake Conference, scheduled to start here on October 28, are in full swing with the Rajasthan Government having allocated Rs.50 lakh for its successful conduct and the experts pooling in ideas and resources to get its maximum advantage for the State. The Union Forest and Environment Ministry and the State Government, which are jointly organising the six-day event, have named it ‘Taal-2007’. The conference is being held for the first time in India. State Chief Secretary D.C. Samant, presiding over the second meeting of the organising committee here, said all wings of the State Government would work in close coordination to ensure success of the global event. He said arrangements were being made for a comfortable stay of representatives of 150 countries likely to attend the conference. The conference, to be held on the theme of ‘Conservation of lakes and wetlands for posterity’, will deliberate on the management of lakes, role of local communities in their conservation, science of aquatic life in lakes, and the social and economic aspects of activities in lakes and wetlands. Principal Secretary (Environment) Ashok Jain, outlining the preparations for hosting the event, said researchers and students participating in it would have an option of staying at guesthouses at subsidised tariff. The conference will be held at B.M. Birla Auditorium, which has hi-tech facilities for audio-visual presentations. Mr. Jain said the State Government’s Tourism and Water Resources Departments would jointly make a presentation on famous lakes and wetlands in Rajasthan, while the Industries Department would organise an exhibition of handicrafts.
