Protect Lankan Tamils

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Puthiya Tamizhagam will take out a rally to Fort St. George, Chennai, on October 6 urging Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to step in to save the lives of Sri Lankan Tamils. PT founder leader K. Krishnasamy told presspersons on Tuesday that the Tamils in the island nation had been fighting for their right to live for the last five decades. The Sri Lankan Army had now embarked on a mission to wipe out the entire Tamil population. The Indian Government was keeping quiet, stating that it would not interfere in the internal affairs of another country. The Tamil Nadu Government was also doing the same, stating that it would not interfere in the foreign policy.

Oppression rising

In the absence of any intervention by the Government of India, the oppression of Tamils was on the rise. When Tamils were being subjected to genocide, India, despite being a strong nation in Asia, should not keep quiet for long.

He appealed to Mr. Karunanidhi to take a “firm and clear stand” on the issue. Tamil Nadu should say “no” to the foreign policy of the Centre, if that proved a hitch for protecting the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Snap all ties

The State should urge the Centre to snap all ties with Sri Lanka, besides working out ways to despatch food, medicine and clothes to the Tamils at the earliest. “If the Centre is not amenable to the proposal placed by the Chief Minister, then Mr. Karunanidhi should take a political decision making use of his political experience, acumen and the strength that the State enjoyed in the Union Government.” Mr. Krishnasamy said.

The Tamil population could not escape even as refugees and take shelter in India.
