THE CHAMPIONS: Ernakulam’s K.A. Aneesh and Thrissur’s P.C. Thulasi, the men’s and women’s singles champions at the Kerala State senior badminton championship in Kochi on Tuesday.

KOCHI: For a State which keeps producing National stars year after year, the final of the State senior badminton championship, at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here on Tuesday evening, was a big disappointment.

Ernakulam’s K.A. Aneesh crushed National doubles champion Sanave Thomas 21-15, 21-11 in a men’s final which lacked the fireworks, while sub-junior National champion, Thrissur’s P.C. Thulasi brushed aside P.S. Linimol 21-1, 21-9 for her maiden women’s title. She had won the State junior crown a few days ago in Kollam.

“I expected more of a fight from Sanave but I think he wants to reserve his best for the doubles,” said the 32-year-old Aneesh who was winning his third State men’s title. The Central Excise Tax Assistant thrived with a push-pull game marked with high tosses and naughty drops.

Thulasi had it much easier. With local girl Linimol, the sub-junior Kerala champion, coming up with a string of unforced errors, the 16-year-old who is coached by M.J. Mohanachandran won comfortably.

In contrast, the doubles finals — won by Sanave Thomas and Jaseel Ismail (men) and Thrissur’s George sisters Merit and Miral — were well fought.

The results (finals):

Men’s singles: K.A. Aneesh (Central Excise, Ekm) bt Sanave Thomas (Central Excise, Ekm) 21-15, 21-11. Doubles: Jaseel P. Ismail (Kzd) & Sanave Thomas (Ekm) bt Markose Bristow & Jaison Xavier (Ekm) 21-19, 21-18.

Women’s singles: P.C. Thulasi (Tsr) bt P.S. Linimol (Ekm) 21-1, 21-9. Doubles: Merit George & Miral George (Tsr) bt P.C. Thulasi & Megha Merin (Tsr) 21-19, 18-21, 21-18.

Masters’ singles: P.G. Thomas (Alp) bt Roy Kuriakose (Ekm) 21-17, 16-21, 21-10. Doubles: George Thomas & Nahas (Ekm) bt Jayachandran & Praveen 21-9, 21-11.

Veterans’ singles: Roy Kuriakose (Ekm) bt Abdul Salam (Ekm) 21-13, 21-12. Doubles: Clifflend Mendez (Tsr) & Abdul Salam bt Roy & Percy (Ekm) 22-20, 17-21, 21-19.
