Army to go ahead with civilian trek in Siachen

Sandeep Dikshit

NEW DELHI: The Army has decided to continue with the first-ever civilian trek to the Siachen glacier from Wednesday, official sources said.

Earlier reports said the trek to the eastern Karakoram area was being called off following protests by Pakistan. “There is no move to call it off. The expedition is taking place in an area which is ours,” said a Defence Ministry official. “The Ministry of Defence views this as a routine adventure-cum-mountaineering activity. This should not be seen in any other way.” The trek will begin on September 19 and end on October 11.
