Bangalore
A modern twist: One of the Shivarapatna craftsmen at work. Bangalore: Kadambari is a registered non-profit group working to foster and promote performing arts and crafts. It also assists the poor and disadvantaged in improving their lives and enabling them to have self-sustaining livelihoods. Kadambari has been working in the village of Shivarapatna in Kolar district, about 55 kilometres from Bangalore. The work is focused on sustaining and preserving the stone craft characteristic of the village, and in raising living standards besides developing it as a heritage craft village for tourism. Kadambari has just completed a design workshop for the craftsmen in the village so that they can make contemporary lifestyle products, as Kadambari believes it will open up a much larger market for the craftsmen. The workshop was conducted by French designer Mireille Arnaud. The artefacts and accessories made at the workshop are being exhibited so that Bangaloreans can appreciate and buy the new range of contemporary lifestyle products crafted by our talented neighbours, who have organised themselves into a group called Shila. The exhibition opens on September 21 and is on till September 23, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Chitrakala Parishath, on Kumara Krupa Road. Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi will inaugurate the show on Friday at 6 p.m. Kadambari can be contacted on 25299234 or 4115-4595. You can also email chandra.jain@vsnl.net
