TAMBARAM: Expressing concern over the spate of crime in cyberspace, Additional Director-General of Police (Administration) Letika Saran, on Tuesday, cautioned youth, particularly women, to be careful while surfing the Internet. The former Chennai Police Commissioner was interacting with students of the Department of History, Madras Christian College, Tambaram, after inaugurating the annual event of the history association. Noting that the number of crimes using the Internet as the medium was shocking, Ms. Saran asked women not to part with any personal details while chatting with unknown persons. “Do not leave behind any personal details on the information boards of community websites,” the senior police officer told the women students. She also advised them against agreeing to meet persons with whom they came to know through chat sites at isolated places and at odd hours. Turning to the men, she said: “Even for a joke, do not disclose or leave behind the profile of your women friends anywhere on the Internet.” Earlier in her address, Ms. Saran, who became Chennai’s first woman Police Commissioner, traced the origins of the city police and the challenges that the police personnel faced. She urged students not to go by the image of the police force as portrayed through a section of the media. Stating that transparency was an integral part of the administration of the force, she urged youth, particularly women, to approach the higher-ups if they had grievances at the police stations. V.J. Philip, college principal, K. Dawn Stanley, head of the department, and Vasanthi Vijayakumar, staff adviser, spoke on the occasion. Faculty members said the 120-year-old history association was among the oldest in the college.
