Security alert for Advani’s visit

Special Correspondent

No parking of vehicles on Chithirai streets

MADURAI: A security alert has been sounded in the southern districts ahead of Bhartatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani’s visit to Tirunelveli and Madurai on Wednesday.

With intelligence agencies perceiving “high” level of threat to the VIP from various banned outfits, top police officials are camping in Tirunelveli where Mr. Advani will address a public meeting.

According to police sources, Mr. Advani would reach Tuticorin by a scheduled aircraft on Wednesday morning and proceed to Tirunelveli where he would address a public meeting as part of the party’s State executive committee meeting.

He would drive to Madurai and halt at the Circuit House. On Thursday morning, he would visit the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple.

“Security personnel have been deployed on high rise buildings along the VIP route. Anti-sabotage checks are being carried out at vulnerable points. Parking of vehicles will be prohibited on the Chithirai Streets (surrounding the Meenakshi temple) from Wednesday evening. Movement of devotees will also be regulated briefly,” a senior police official said.

Arrangements reviewed

Inspector-General of Police (South Zone), Sanjeev Kumar, reviewed the security scheme with senior police officials in Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli on Tuesday.

Mr. Advani is covered by the National Security Guards under the ‘Z Plus’ scale of security.
