Spurt in seizure of illegal firearms, fake currency

Police bust several rackets in the recent past

Anti-social elements from other areas sneak into city

CUTTACK: Millennium City is fast turning a major destination of illegal firearms and fake currency from neighbouring States.

Firearms are coming from Bihar and West Bengal, while counterfeits are from Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand.

The city police, who are gearing up for the hectic puja season, have in the recent past busted several rackets involving illegal firearms and fake currency. After arresting three persons of Andhra Pradesh while they were trying to deposit fake notes worth over Rs. 2 lakh in a nationalised bank here in July, the police on Sunday arrested five persons from Jharkhand and recovered fake notes worth over Rs. 3 lakhs from their possession.

Similarly, the city police also busted a firearms supply racket last week when they arrested a Bihar youth after recovering two revolvers, a pistol, 18 live bullets and two magazines from him.

Two months ago, another youth from West Bengal, a gun-supplier, was arrested. Four pistols, three revolvers and 28 live cartridges were seized from him.

“Of late, anti-social elements from neighbouring States are sneaking into the city to deal in illegal arms and counterfeits as prospective buyers are increasing,” said a senior police officer of the district.

This year, the city police have already seized more than 70 illegal arms and counterfeit currency amounting to Rs. 5 lakh , the official added.

But the shocking part is that the police have failed to nab any local person involved in these rackets.

“Unless and until the prospective buyers are not brought to book, the illegal trades would continue to create chaos in the city,” the official added.
