Congress leader’s plea on Vedanta project

Bhubaneswar: The Congress on Tuesday claimed that 90 per cent of people facing displacement due to the proposed Vedanta university project in Puri district, belonged to other backward caste (OBC) farmers.

This claim was made by senior Congress leader and AICC OBC department chairman K.C. Lenka.

He urged UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to come to the rescue of poor OBC people.

In a letter to Gandhi, Mr. Lenka pointed out that 90 per cent of the villagers were small and margional farmers who earned their livelihood from agriculture only.

Mr. Lenka pointed out that local people had been opposing the university project tooth and nail.

“The people have been opposing local MLA Maheswar Mohanty and local MP Braja Kishore Tripathy, both from the BJD,” he informed Ms. Gandhi adding that the Congress should fight for the interest of the Other Backward Classes who remained neglected since ages.

The Congress leader too cautioned that the situation at the ground level remained volatile which may explode at anytime. -PTI
