VIZIANAGARAM: Efforts are being made to further strengthen the National Service Scheme, according to Assistant Programme Advisor K. Rajendran.
Participating in the AU-NSS district-level programme officers conference at Maharaja’s Post-Graduate College here on Tuesday, Mr. Rajendran said that the NSS with 30 lakh volunteers and 40,000 units in the country was the biggest among youth services in Asia.
In order to strengthen it further, the Centre had drawn up a plan, he said and added that the government had in principle agreed to consider the proposal for increasing the grant from Rs. 15,000 per annum per unit to Rs. 45,000.
State Liaison Officer P. Ramachandra Rao said that NSS volunteers had been organising rallies to create awareness among people on AIDS and also striving hard for promotion of literacy.
He said 90 volunteers from the State would participate in the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi next year.
T. Sobhasree, Andhra University NSS Programme Coordinator said that 500 units with about 50,000 volunteers were there in the university jurisdiction. L. Lakshmu Naidu, District Programme Officer, R. Srinivasu, Programme Officer and the college Principal K. Hanumantha Rao spoke.
