TAMBARAM: A few dozen construction workers were hospitalised with acute diarrhoeal disorder after consuming the fish they had caught from the Adyar river in Nandambakkam on Sunday.

The men, mostly from Orissa and West Bengal, have been admitted at the Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet, and a private hospital near Nandambakkam.

Health officials said 33 workers, suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhoea, were undergoing treatment. Tests are being performed to rule out cholera. The initial tests have shown negative and results of sub-culture tests are awaited. Doctors said the patients would be discharged after treatment so that other family members or neighbours are not affected.

More than 1,500 workers are staying in temporary shelters built by two construction companies that are building Information Technology parks in Manapakkam. The construction site is a couple of km away from the shelters that have come up on the banks of the river.

Health Department officials ruled out water contamination as the cause for the problem as only those who consumed the fish on Sunday evening suffered from the illness. For the past two days, a team of doctors and nurses from Moovarasempettu PHC have been camping at the spot administering medicine to all those living in the shelters. The officials said the two construction companies have been asked to clear the debris and clean up the entire premises of the workers’ shelters. The companies were also asked to provide safe and protected drinking water to the workers. Civic workers from Nandambakkam Town Panchayat also cleaned up garbage around the shelters.
