Go for variety of economic activities, women SHGs told

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: The project officer of District Rural Development Authority and Additional Collector, Archana Patnaik, has called upon women self-help groups to take up economic activities totally different from the projects taken up by other groups functioning in the same area.

She was participating at the valedictory of Literacy Week celebrations organised by Hand-in-Hand (HiH), Tamil Nadu, here on Tuesday.

According to Ms. Patnaik, though it was not wrong in being impressed by success stories of other groups, taking up similar activities would only result in a situation where all the groups would be fighting for small/restricted market available for their products within that region.

To sustain business

Each group should take up different types of ventures to sustain their business given the aggressive marketing strategies adopted by other firms/entrepreneurs.

She also called upon village panchayat presidents, who participated in the valedictory function, to convince women SHGs functioning in their area to take up different economic activities and involve them in literacy rate improvement programmes Chief executive officer of HiH Kalpana Shankar outlined the activities of the organisation aimed at overall improving rural areas and eradication of child labour.

Child labour

Project director Kalyani said a signature campaign, launched as part of the Literacy Week celebrations to create awareness of child labour problem among village panchayat presidents in nine blocks in Kancheepuram district, had elicited good response. Many showed keen interest in checking school dropout rate, she added.
