CBI arrests two constables in paper leakage case

Special Correspondent

They are the first arrests after the agency took over the investigation

It has so far recorded the statements of nearly 200 persons

CHENNAI: The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Chennai, on Monday arrested two police constables in connection with the case pertaining to the leakage of question papers for recruitment of police constables in Tamil Nadu in 2005.

Their names were given as Durai Munusamy (32) and Chinnathambi (37). They were the first arrests after the agency took over the investigation on the orders of the Madras High Court on a petition filed by a candidate of Vellore district.

The two, it is alleged, had a role in taking away the question papers prior to the examination and facilitating the leakage.

Officers queried

As part of the investigation, the agency had recorded the statements of a retired Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police, a serving Additional Director-General of Police and an Inspector-General of Police. It has so far recorded the statements of nearly 200 persons in connection with the case, a CBI officer said.

Nearly 80 persons have been cited as accused in the FIR re-registered by the CBI for IPC offences including criminal conspiracy, trespass, theft, public servant disobeying law with intent to cause injury to any person and criminal breach of trust by public servant, and for offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

There was leakage of question papers twice when the examination for the selection of 1997 Grade II police constables was held first in March and then in June 2005. The case was handled by the Chintadripet police and later transferred to the Special Investigation Team of the State Crime Branch CID.
