KAIKALURU: A team of aquatic biologists, including scientists from abroad, visited Kolleru Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the country, on Tuesday.
Scientists from Belgium, Thailand and the United States of America, who came here to participate in an international symposium on large Branchiopods being conducted by the Department of Zoology and aquaculture of the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU), studied the plants and animals of the lake during the visit.
World-renowned limnologist Henri J. Dumont from the University of Ghent, Belgium, authorities on shrimp culture Stephen C. Weeks from the University of Akron, USA, La-orsri Sanomuang, from Khon Kaen University, Thailand, were among the scientists who visited the lake.
ANU Dean of Natural Sciences M.K. Durga Prasad and Madurai Kamaraj University professor T.J Pandian explained to the scientists the history of the unique freshwater lake. Prof. Prasad said the original flora and fauna that was destroyed by aquaculture was thriving again.
