dated September 20, 1957: Sino-Indian friendship

The Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, arrived in Peking by air on September 18 from Canton for a visit at the invitation of Chairman Mao Tse-tung. The Vice-President, whose arrival was delayed by 24 hours because of plane engine trouble, was met at the airport by China’s Vice-Chairman, Marshal Chu-teh. In reply to the welcome speech of Mr. Chu-teh, Dr. Radhakrishnan said that he had no doubt that the Chinese “in all their endeavours to build a strong, prosperous country will not forget the lessons of moderation and humanism which have come down for over 4,000 years.” He said India and China had been good neighbours and good friends for more than 2,000 years and this was “a great example of peaceful co-existence. Saints and scholars came from China to India and saints and scholars went from India to China. Now we are renewing old contacts.” Dr. Radhakrishnan said the two countries were passing through a similar stage of revolution. “Revolution does not mean bloodshed or barricades or violence. Any change in the existing conditions is revolution.” Later, Chairman Mao received Dr. Radhakrishnan at a reception. Present at the reception were Marshal Chu-teh, Mr. Liu Shao-chi, Mr. Chou En-lai and Mr. R.K. Nehru, India’s Ambassador to China.
