This Day That Age
A high-power committee will be appointed in each State and at the Centre to review the Government’s pending cases and writ applications in courts to decide whether their perusal was at all necessary. This decision was taken at the conference of State Law Ministers which commenced in New Delhi on September 18. Such a review, it was hoped, would result in the withdrawal of certain cases and settlement of others which on the whole would go a long way in reducing the existing arrears in courts. In future, it was emphasised that a detailed examination should be made before taking a case to the court. The suggestion of the Union Law Minister, Mr. A.K. Sen, who presided over the conference, that there be common counsel for Central and State litigation work, other than those relating to income-tax, at the State and district level, was accepted.
