Letters to the Editor
The editorial, ‘Flood preparedness, a necessity’ (Sept. 19), should serve as an eye-opener to the authorities concerned. Making aerial surveys, making exaggerated estimates of crop and financial losses, and asking the Centre to immediately provide funds for the victims are some of the usual responses of most flood-affected States. What is essential is to think of long-term solutions. Diverting flood waters to water-starved areas is also an option worth considering. G.M. Rama Rao, Visakhapatnam The editorial has highlighted an important issue, but, unfortunately, in our country there is never any serious discussion on such subjects. Our Parliament and State Assemblies have very little time to engage themselves in debate on matters of health, agriculture, and education. The media, the TV channels in particular, which can play a big role in creating awareness are more interested in sensationalising a few cases with a view to improving their circulation/TRPs. V. Krishnan, San Diego
