CHENGAM: The Chengam Panchayat Union is in the stage of evolving a master plan to woe the private companies to actively participate in the village adoption programme. The programme aims at achieving 100 per cent literacy in Chengam block.

G.Kumar, Chairman, Chengam Panchayat Union, told The Hindu that now the male literacy rate in Chengam was 72.9 per cent and the female literacy rate only 50.9 per cent.

Mr. Kumar said the village adoption programme would also help to improve the economic status of residents in Chengam block. This would simultaneously help to stop large-scale migration from the town.

He, however, acknowledged the fact that the various projects introduced by local service organisations in Chengam block had helped to reduce the rate of migration compared to what had been experienced a couple of years ago.

Colleges to be approached

The panchayat union chairman said that he had planned to approach various private educational institutions and companies, including the TVS Group and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), to actively take part in the village adoption programme. He would request these companies and educational institutions to adopt villages in Chengam Block for a comprehensive education plan to achieve 100 per cent literacy. “It will be a well-planned initiative as Tiruvannamalai was educationally backward. The initiate will aim at overall development of Chengam Block,” he pointed out.

He said that residents in Chengam Block depended on agriculture-related activities for livelihood. As most of the areas had been hit by drought, many families in Chengam were forced to migrate to other States for jobs.

Another drawback was that there were no industries in Chengam and hence the educated youth were denied adequate job opportunities.

The State Government too was looking into various opportunities for employment generation at Chengam. As a step in this regard, Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin had laid the foundation stone for a milk-processing unit at Ammapalayam.

Computer classes

Mr. Kumar said computer classes would be conducted for the downtrodden students and teachers in the Chengam block. The panchayat union would charge a minimum fee from the students.

The union had managed to mobilize 24 systems from various blocks in the district. The classes would be held at the Chengam Block Development Office.

The training period would be for three to five months.
