CHIKMAGALUR: Of the 1,140 nomination papers filed for the elections to the eight civic bodies in Chikmagalur district, the nomination papers of 16 candidates were rejected after scrutiny on Tuesday. The break-up of candidates that are left in the fray are Chikmagalur City Municipal Council (242), Kadur Town Municipal Council (189), Birur Town Municipal Council (185), Tarikere Town Municipal Council (217), N.R. Pura Town Panchayat (108), Koppa Town Panchayat (66), Sringeri Town Panchayat (57) and Mudigere Town Panchayat (50). A candidate belonging to the Congress in Tarikere will be elected unopposed as the nomination papers of both his opponents were rejected. The supporters of an independent candidate in Chikmagalur staged a demonstration on the zilla panchayat premises after her nomination papers were rejected. Campaigning is picking up as the election date draws closer. Door-to-door campaigning is going on briskly. Some candidates have even been getting garbage and drains cleaned by a couple of municipal workers while greeting the residents of the area with folded hands. OpportunityThe elections will provide an opportunity for the Congress, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP to show their strength and popularity. While the Communist Party of India (CPI) is hoping to improve its score, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is making an attempt to open its account. Almost all parties have faced difficulties in selecting candidates due to change in reservation. Some candidates have been forced to change their wards.
