ALAPPUZHA: K.E. Ismail, CPI State assistant secretary, said here on Wednesday that the controversy over Merchiston Estate would not have assumed such proportions had Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan acted promptly on a letter given to him by Forest Minister Benoy Viswom. Inaugurating a strike declaration convention of the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Federation here, Mr. Ismail said the Minister had sent a letter to the Chief Minister on August 24, pointing out that there were anomalies in the land deal and that officials could be involved in the deal. However, as Mr. Achuthanandan “failed” to take action at the appropriate time, the entire issue had now snowballed into a major controversy . — Staff Reporter
