JAIPUR: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and civil rights organisations have condemned the attempt by a group of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activists to disturb a lecture programme of CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat at Rajasthan College here. The party described the attempt as “a reflection of the fascist attitude of ABVP’s parent body, the Bharatiya Janata Party”. The CPI (M) State secretary, Vasudev, and party MLA Amra Ram, in a statement, alleged that the attempt to disturb the lecture, on the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement, was at the behest of the ruling party in Rajasthan. “In a democracy any individual or political party has a right to express his/its viewpoint. If the Government in power is trying to muffle the voices of those who hold a different viewpoint, then the future of democracy is not safe,” they observed. A band of ABVP protestors had raised slogans against Ms. Karat as the first speaker of the programme, Bhadra Kumar, a former diplomat, started speaking on the nuclear deal. The students who were pushed out of the hall went away after the police arrived at the scene.
