Rain fury claims 10 more lives in Karnataka

Karnataka Bureau

BANGALORE: Ten persons died on Wednesday as torrential rain continued in parts of the State. With this, the toll has risen to 19 in the State since Monday.

Although some areas had a respite from heavy rainfall, the downpour disrupted life in Raichur district. The heavy rain in the last three days destroyed standing crops in several thousands of acres of land. A large number of villages remained cut off. The official machinery swung into action by opening gruel centres in the rain-affected region.

Four persons died in Raichur district which received a record 161.7 mm of rainfall in the last three days. A woman was killed when a roof of a house collapsed on her while she was asleep on Tuesday night in Manvi town. A woman and a man drowned while trying to cross the Maski nala near Utaknur village in the taluk. The police recovered the body of the woman while search is on for the other body.

A man was burnt to death when lightening struck him at Chintalkunta village in Deodurga taluk of the district on Tuesday. There were reports that a loaded goods vehicle had been washed away at a nala near Kota village. About two lakh cusecs of water from the Tungabhadra dam had been released, according to Annes Siraj, Chief Executive Officer of Raichur Zilla Panchayat.

Two women died when their houses collapsed in Bellary district. About 4,000 houses had been damaged in the recent rain, Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Four persons, including two children, were killed in house collapse at Hadli village in Nargund taluk of Gadag district on Wednesday. Seventy-eight persons, mostly women and children, were airlifted from the inundated Raddera Naganur village in Nargund taluk and Acharakoppa (Kuruvinakoppa) village in Ron taluk.

An IAF helicopter sent from Bangalore began the rescue work early on Wednesday. But the chopper developed a snag in the afternoon. A stretch of the road between Hubli and Solapur had been washed away.
