NEW FORUM: Students at Stanley Medical College discussing the concept of the newly-launched Academic Club that allows students to choose the lecture topic of the day.

CHENNAI: Imagine a classroom where students decide the topic for the day or engage an expert of their choice to discuss a modern-day dilemma.

This is precisely what the newly-floated Academic Club at Stanley Medical College sets out to establish. It proposes to hold a series of academic extension programmes that allow medicos to determine whether they want an expert lecturing on the latest advances in diabetes management or an oncologist discussing the contra-indications of a promising anti-cancer drug.

The idea was floated by final year students at a recent alumni meeting of the college. The positive response to the concept hastened the formation of an Academic Club to take forward the idea.

The club would offer a choice of topics from which the students select those that they feel they need to know more about. This topic might not be part of the curriculum.

The activity is non-academic in that it does not involve an assessment. In addition to the existing faculty at Stanley, expert practitioners from various specialities will be roped in to address students.

Members of the college alumni, many of whom are now veterans in their respective areas, have also obliged the popular request to take classes at their alma mater.
