Allies urge Maoists to return to government

KATHMANDU: A day after the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) quit the coalition government, leaders of the eight-party alliance, in which the Maoists are a member, vowed to save the alliance and work together to resolve the current crisis through dialogue.

Issuing a statement on behalf of the eight-party alliance, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said, “The eight-party unity will remain and the leaders will work together to find a solution to the current problem.”

Mr. Sitaula issued the statement following a meeting of the top leaders at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Baluwatar, on Wednesday afternoon.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Communist Party of Nepal (UML), general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, Maoist Chairman Prachanda and other leaders attended the meeting.

Sources said Mr. Koirala asked the Maoist leaders to maintain patience for further agreements till the meeting of the Nepali Congress’s policy-making body, maha samittee, slated for September 23-24.

The meeting is expected to formally endorse the Nepali Congress central committee proposal to go for a republic.

Earlier in the morning, the Nepali Congress held its central committee meeting and urged the Maoists to return to the government and not to walk away from the peace process.

The standing committee meeting of the CPN (UML) also requested the Maoists to return to the government.

The Maoists, meanwhile, decided to request a special session of the interim Parliament to discuss the current political crisis.
