It is Jaiprakash Shetty’s day out

BANGALORE: Jaiprakash C. Shetty stopped the clock in 48.2 seconds to erase the two-year-old record of 48.8 set by Aiyappa of Al Ameen College in the men’s 400 metres event on the second day of the 43rd Bangalore University inter-collegiate athletics meet at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Wednesday.

Jaiprakash then anchored his college — Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College (SBMJC) — to a record-breaking effort in the 4x400m relay as the quartet of Karan Salam, G.N. Bopanna, H.B. Kiran and Jaiprakash eclipsed the 16-year mark of 3:26.9 seconds held by Al Ameen College with an effort of 3:20.8. The focus was on Jaiprakash’s tussle with Shrinivas of Al Ameen in the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay. However, SBJMC was far ahead by the end of the third lap itself and Jaiprakash easily won the gold for his college.

Team feted

The Karnataka women’s basketball team, that won the South Zone basketball championship in Hyderabad last week, was felicitated by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) and the Karnataka State Basketball Association (KSBA).

The Karnataka women won the title beating Kerala 77-64 after more than 15 years.

While the KSBA presented a cheque of Rs. 25,000 to the winning team, coached by former international Jaywanti Shyam, the DYSS commissioner too announced an identical amount. Sonamdeep Kaur of Karnataka was adjudged the Player of the Championship.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State junior men’s team, which is on a friendly tour of Malaysia, won its first outing with a 82-67 verdict over the Malaysian junior National team in Kuala Lumpur. After leading 39-34 at half-time, the State squad was well served by captain Roshan Thankachan (22) and Nixon (20).

Thumping win

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) notched up a thumping 10-1 victory over Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in the Tier I of the Synergy Super Division league hockey tournament here on Wednesday.

Amar Aiyamma scored four goals (10th, 15th, 24th and 68th) including a hat-trick and Pundlik (8th, 52nd & 56th) scored a treble and Gurwinder Singh (69th & 70th) had a brace. Gurpreet Singh (5th, off a penalty corner) scored the first goal for the winner.

Teja Babu (46th) scored the only goal off a penalty corner for HAL.

In another match, Army Green XI beat Army Service Corps 3-1 with Jerome Kujur (12th & 45th) scoring a double. Rajendra Singh (60th) scored the other goal through penalty corner. Harpreet Singh slammed in a penalty stroke in the 66th minute for the loser.

Army Red XI defeated Karnataka State Police 3-1. Dhananjay Mahadik (10th) and Anil Kumar Ekka (13th) slotted home two goals before the break and Laxman Rao (14th) kept KSP’s hopes alive at the breather. S.V. Sunil showed his brilliance with a crashing reverse sweep (63rd) to score Army Red’s third goal.

Mysore wins

Mysore district bagged the overall title with 224 points in the two-day district-level Dasara sports meet 2007 which concluded at the Chamundivihar Sports Complex, Mysore, on Wednesday.

In gymnastics, N. Lokesh (49.40 points) claimed the individual crown with gold-winning efforts in floor exercise, pommel horse and roman rings, and three silver medals.

In the women’s section, Amulya Bharadwaj (28.40 points) won the individual title with one gold (balancing beam) and three silver medals.

Mysore clinched the football title too beating Nanjangud 3-1 in the final. In kabaddi, Mysore got the better of Periyapatna 23-3 in the men’s section, while in throwball, Nanjangud beat Mysore 25-22, 12-25, 27-25.

The winners will represent Mysore division in the divisional-level Dasara sports meet to be held at Mangalore next month.
