Denial of ticket to senior Congressmen causes disappointment in Davangere

H.S. Narasimha Kumar

Some communities feel let down at their candidates’ disqualification

DAVANGERE: Fielding of new candidates in place of senior sitting Congress party councillors to the Davangere City Corporation elections has surprised many. Denial of party ticket to many former councillors and presidents of the civic body has triggered widespread debate. Many aspirants have been disappointed on being denied ticket to contest the elections this time.

D. Basavaraj, Lalithamma Thippeswamy, Abdul Rahim and Manjunath, who had been presidents of the civic body earlier are among those denied party ticket. B. Lokesh, a former councillor known for his integrity and hard work, has also been deprived of the opportunity to contest this time.

Mr. Basavaraj who is a staunch follower of Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA, and his son S.S. Mallikarjun, former Minister, was denied a Congress ticket despite having won the civic elections since 1990 for three terms consecutively. He was the first person to file his nomination papers for the corporation elections a few days ago.

However, Dinesh K. Shetty and Shivanahalli Ramesh, also former presidents of the city municipality stand to benefit.

They have been given party ticket to contest from P.J. extension and Nijalingappa extension wards respectively. K.G. Shivakumar, also a former president of the municipality, whose ward was changed owing to reservation, has been accommodated in another ward.

Mr. Basavaraj belongs to the Bhovi community and B. Lokesh to the Banajiga Lingayat community.

The members of the two communities expressed disappointment over their not being given party ticket.

In all, 492 candidates from different political parties (some of them independents) have filed their nomination to contest in 41 wards of the city corporation. While the Congress and the BJP have fielded their candidates in all 41 wards, the Janata Dal (Secular) has fielded its candidates in 35 wards.

The Communist Party of India has fielded 13 candidates.
