Show more commitment, Chief Minister tells staff

Special Correspondent

Urges them to help overcome the delay in recruitments

‘Employees should take the lead to ease woes of public’

Delay in furnishing information to MLAs alleged

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While bargaining for rights, Government employees should be conscious of their responsibilities too, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said.

Inaugurating the 34th State conference of the Kerala PSC Employees Union here on Wednesday morning, Mr. Achuthanandan said that public commitment should be the bedrock of the civil service.

Employees had played a pivotal role in increasing the efficiency of the commission and overcoming the delay in recruitments, but there were complaints that information was not being furnished to the public and MLAs on time.

The delay in furnishing information to MLAs within the prescribed time and the reply that details were being gathered, speak of the inadequacies in their functioning.

The Chief Minister said that he had to read such answers in the Assembly and that was an embarrassment to the Government. Employees should take the lead to ease the woes of the public. He reminded the employees that their salary was the tax-payers’ income.

The LDF Government had taken steps to lift the ban on appointments and put an end to backdoor appointments by taking action against heads of departments who failed to report vacancies to the commission within a fortnight.

Recruitment of administrative staff in devaswom boards and the physically challenged to Government service had been entrusted with the PSC. When the Government completed one year in office, the commission had recruited 25,000 persons. Still, there were complaints of inefficiency, he said.

He accused the UPA Government of pursuing the neo-economic policies and trying to make India an ally of the United States in violation of the non-alignment policy of the country. He called upon the employees to join the drive to create awareness against such tendencies.

Union president P.N. Sarasamma presided. Reception committee chairman Kadakampally Surendran welcomed and general convener J.S. Rajesh proposed a vote of thanks.
