Following strike by students

The Principal said a detailed report will be sent to higher authorities

TIRUCHI: The Periyar EVR Government College here was closed indefinitely on Wednesday after a section of students resorted to strike demanding action against a faculty member for allegedly using abusive words against a third-year Economics student.

The third year student rejoined earlier this month after undergoing suspension for 10 days along with one of his classmates.

The agitating students also demanded that one of the punished students, residing in the hostel, be readmitted in the hostel.

The two students were suspended for reportedly behaving in an unbecoming way with girl students.

Classes were suspended only for Humanities disciplines on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the closure of the college was announced.

Confirming the indefinite closure, the Principal Sheela Gnanasironmani said a detailed report would be sent to higher authorities.

The two students were suspended based on an enquiry by a committee comprising three faculty members. The students, who were asked to appear along with their parents, were said to have admitted to their wrong doing in writing before the committee and had assured not to indulge in such acts in future. A fine of Rs. 200 was imposed on each student. After their parents expressed regret, the students were permitted to attend the classes after the suspension period.

As a precautionary measure, a posse of police personnel was deployed in front of the institution.
