‘Proper marketing is essential’

Udupi: Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj has said that proper marketing of agricultural produce either through the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) or through cooperatives was necessary. He was speaking at a meeting of farmers organised by the Udupi Zilla Krishak Sangha here on Wednesday.

Mr. Ponnuraj said certificates could be given for crops and vegetables grown using purely organic methods. Contract farming had entered the country and was here to stay, he said and added that farmers should not expect support price for crops produced under organic farming.

Loans at subsidised interest rates had been given to 8,705 farmers in the district. Some farmers, who had used the “System of Rice Intensification” popularised by the Department of Agriculture had produced 35 quintals of paddy in an acre of land, Mr. Ponnuraj said.
