Rain hits traffic in city

BUMPER-TO-BUMPER CRAWL: Traffic jam near Windsor Manor Bridge in Bangalore on Wednesday.

BANGALORE: Heavy rainfall lashed across the city on Wednesday evening and severely affected the movement of traffic.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the city received rainfall of 12.1 mm while the airport recorded 6.6 mm on Wednesday.

Traffic movement was severely hit on a stretch of T. Chowdiah Road between High Grounds Police Station and Windsor Manor bridge following water logging near Le Meridian and near Cauvery Cinema. As the traffic on this stretch of road was moving slow, police had to divert some of the vehicles to Palace Road Cross.

Traffic movement was also affected near Hudson Circle, Residency Road, Vittal Malya Road, Old Madras Road, Hosur Road, near Kempe Gowda Bus Station and Gayatri Nagar.

There were reports of water entering a few houses in Bhadrappa Layout. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike personnel were in pumping out the water.

The road connecting the residents of Sahakara Nagar G Block off Hebbal Flyover with the Bellary Road continued to be blocked. “We continue to face this problem after every downpour,” said M.R. Srinivas, a resident of the area.

Processions

Parts of the city, including the busy K.H. Road, experienced traffic jams on Wednesday as several groups took out processions to immerse Ganesha idols in the Lalbagh and Ulsoor lakes. The police said that around 3 p.m., hundreds of people took out a procession from Sudhamanagar to immerse a huge Ganesha idol in the Lalbagh Lake. Traffic came to near halt on K.H. Road, Shanthinagar and surrounding areas.

Although the police diverted the traffic, it did nothing to ease the congestion.

It was a bumper-to-bumper crawl even on Tannery Road and adjoining areas such as Modi Road, Periyar Circle and Pottery Circle, as hundreds of Ganesha idols were taken in a procession to the Ulsoor Lake for immersion. The traffic in Ulsoor area continued late in the night on Wednesday. Nearly 30 platoons of police were deployed in sensitive areas such as Tannery Road.
