Kerala Congress(B) seeks probe

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Congress(B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai on Wednesday demanded a comprehensive probe into the sale of Government land by Harrison Malayalam Plantations.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Pillai said in 1964, the company had nearly 70,000 hectares in its possession, including 8,300 acres classified as excess.

Over the years, the company sold off several of its estates, most of them held under lease from the Government. Apart from selling Government land, the company had also defaulted in payment of lease rent.

He recalled that the Oommen Chandy Government had set up a committee to recover alienated Government land. Mr. Pillai also demanded a CBI probe into the Merchiston estate sale.

He said the deal could not have been pulled off by Forest Minister Benoy Viswom on his own and he must have got support from the LDF’s political leadership.
