Thiruvananthapuram: The government will enact legislation to confiscate the illegal wealth amassed by public men, Minister for Home and Vigilance Kodyeri Balakrishnan has said. Replying to questions in the Assembly on Wednesday, the Minister said the draft Bill in this regard had already been approved by the government. Mr. Balakrishnan said the government decided to confiscate the illegal wealth amassed by three government officials — the former Director of Health Services V.K. Rajan, the former Joint Regional Transport Officer R. Rajendra Prasad and the former Deputy Superintendent of Police H. Shaji. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) had been asked to conduct surprise checks in more government departments to curb corruption and to make the civil service corruption free. The VACB had also been asked to complete inquiry into the corruption cases on a time-bound manner. As many as 596 cases are pending with the VACB. During the last one year, 101 cases had been completed. Steps for prosecution had commenced in 78 cases, Vigilance Tribunal inquiry in eight cases, Departmental procedures in 13 cases and steps for recovery in two cases.
